Behind the wheel

Sintra's hill roads. The climb toward Sintra's palaces runs through tight bends and dense woodland; a car with real low-speed control matters more here than raw power. Parking near the historic centre fills early, so timing the drive for mid-morning or late afternoon avoids the worst of it.

Cascais and Estoril coastline. The coastal road west of Lisbon opens into long, smooth curves along the Atlantic, favoured by clients who want a convertible top down for an hour or two. Estoril's marina area has metered parking; Cascais old town is easier on foot once you arrive.

Alentejo wine country. East of Lisbon, the landscape flattens into cork oak plains and vineyard estates. It's a longer drive suited to a comfortable grand tourer or SUV rather than a strict two-seater, with wide, quiet roads once past the city outskirts.

Arrábida and the Setúbal peninsula. South across the river, the Arrábida hills give a shorter, sharper driving route with sea views on one side and limestone cliffs on the other. Roads narrow near the coastal viewpoints, so a compact or mid-size sports car handles the terrain better than a larger SUV.

Óbidos and the Silver Coast. North of Lisbon, the drive to Óbidos passes through open farmland before reaching the walled town itself, where cars are left outside the gates. It works well as a full-day outing, with the return route offering a straighter, faster stretch back toward the city.
