Behind the wheel

The coast road to Altea and Calpe. A relaxed stretch of the Costa Blanca with sea views on one side and low hills on the other. Good for a convertible on a clear morning, with plenty of pull-offs for photos and no need to rush the drive.

Guadalest and the inland sierra. The road climbs steadily once you leave the coast behind, winding through the foothills toward the Guadalest reservoir. Give it a full morning or afternoon rather than squeezing it in — the bends reward a slower pace.

Santa Pola and the salt flats. A short, flat run south of the city, easy for a half-day out with children. Parking near the seafront is straightforward outside peak summer weekends.

Dénia and the Marina Alta. A longer drive up the coast to a working harbour town with a castle above it. Suits an SUV or a comfortable saloon better than a low sports car, given the town's older streets.

Elche's palm groves and old town. Inland and quick to reach, with wide avenues lined by palms and a compact historic centre. A practical stop for a car with good visibility and easy parking near the centre.
