Behind the wheel

Serra de Tramuntana. The mountain road between Valldemossa and Sóller rewards a car with real steering feel and grip. Narrow hairpins and tunnels make a compact sports car or a well-sorted convertible more useful here than anything oversized; allow extra time in high season when tour coaches share the same lanes.

Puerto Portals and the southwest coast. Marina-side dining and beach clubs along Portals Nous and Bendinat draw an evening crowd that arrives by car. Valet is common at the larger restaurants, so a striking design or a plug-in hybrid both suit the setting; daytime parking near the marina fills quickly on weekends.

Deià and the northwest villages. The coast road toward Deià and Banyalbufar is tight, scenic and slow by design, better suited to a nimble convertible than a large SUV. Village parking is limited, so a short walk from the car park into the centre is normal rather than an inconvenience.

Palma old town and Paseo Marítimo. Inside the old town, streets are narrow and largely pedestrian, so a car earns its place on the approach and departure rather than inside the centre itself. The Paseo Marítimo waterfront run, by contrast, suits an open-top drive at low speed with the bay in view.

Alcúdia and the north bay. The drive north to Alcúdia and Pollença covers more open road and faster stretches, making it a natural test for a GT or a performance SUV with real range. Resort parking is generally straightforward outside peak arrival hours in July and August.
